太平洋戦争に駆り出された父の帰りを信じて待つ主人公の少年ペッパー。
日本に新型爆弾が落とされたニュースを聞き、
「これでパパも戻ってくる！」
と歓喜するも、ペッパーは記録映像で広島の惨状を知り、
母親からも、
「爆弾投下は、必ずしも戦地のパパたちのためにはならないかもしれない」
と告げられる。
爆弾は、人々の命も、文化も、奪ったのだと子供ながらに理解するペッパー。
（彼は、日系アメリカ人の友人ハシモトから日本の侍の逸話を学んだばかりだった）
そしておそらくパパの命も、、、。
２０１５年に全米１０４５館で公開された『LITTLE BOY』は、
公開初日の動員で興行成績「第８位」を記録。
米国配給の作品ではあるが、
メキシコ人監督のアレハンドロ・モンテヴェルデと、
同じくメキシコ人共同脚本家のぺぺ・ポルティーヨのチームだったからこそ、
中立的な目で描くことができた、＃反戦映画 。
出演に、エミリー・ワトソン、トム・ウィルキンソン、
ケリー・ヒロユキ・タガワ、ジェイコブ・サルヴァティ、尾崎英二郎ら。
The main character, Pepper, is a young boy who believes in and waits for the return of his father, who was sent off to fight in the Pacific War.
He hears the news that a new type of bomb has been dropped on Hiroshima Japan, and thought
“This will bring my dad back!”
But Pepper learns of the devastation of Hiroshima from a news footage of bombing, and when his mother also tells Pepper that the bombing may not be a good thing for Dad’s sake, he feels devastated.
He understands, through his child’s eyes and heart, that the bomb took away lives and culture (that he had just learned from his Japanese American friend Hashimoto).
And perhaps his Dad’s life, may also…
LITTLE BOY” was released in 1,045 theaters in the U.S. in 2015,
and was the ‘No. 8’ film at the box office on its first day of release.
This film was distributed in the United States as one of Hollywood’s independent films.
But the film was made possible by the team of Mexican director Alejandro Monteverde and his Mexican co-writer, Pepe Portillo, who portrayed the war from a neutral point of view.
